Acid Rain Mineral Pack
$40

Rainwater can dissolve heavy metals and other impurities from materials of the catchment and storage tank. Rainwater lacks minerals, but some minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, iron and fluoride, in appropriate concentrations are considered very essential for health. By adding mineral to the catchment and storage tank, the ph of the water is raised, making the water less acidic.

Our Acid Rain Mineral Packs contain calcite (calcium carbonate) and corosex (magnesium oxide). When added to a catchment tank in a pool float, these minerals are gradually absorbed into the water as needed. And because the water only absorbs what it needs, the Mineral Pack can last for 6-9 months!

Floating Dispenser
$20

This Floating Dispenser can be paired with our Acid Rain Mineral Packs to easily dispense minerals into a catchment tank.

It has an all plastic construction that is completely safe to use.

NSF ROOF COATING FOR RAINWATER CATCHMENT SYSTEMS

Lexis Roof Coating
NSF Protocol P151 and Standard 61 certification provides assurance to both public health officials and consumers that the system components are safe for use in rainwater collection systems and for potable water applications respectively. If potable water is needed, take care in selecting materials and elastomeric roof coatings which will come into contact with the water as it is collected, since some impurities can be picked up by the rainwater as it travels through the collection system.

Rainwater Catchment Upgrades

First Flush Diverter

Fitting an appropriately sized First Flush Water Diverter is critical to achieve good quality water. Water Diverters improve water quality, reduce tank/cistern maintenance and protect pumps by preventing the first flush of water, which may contain contaminants from the roof, from entering the tank/cistern.

When it rains, water slowly builds up in the roof guttering system before it exits through the downspout. The first flush of water from the roof can contain amounts of bacteria from decomposed insects, bird and animal droppings and concentrated tannic acid. It may also contain sediments, water borne heavy metals and chemical residues, all of which are undesirable elements to have in a water storage system.
A method for the removal of sediment and debris from the collection surface by diverting initial rainfall from entry
into the cistern(s).

Leaf Screen

Gutter screens keep large debris out of the storage tank. Screens require monthly maintenance and they don’t prevent small particles from being washed into the tank.
Downspout screens also prevent large debris from reaching the tank. These are easier to keep clean because they are usually within reach and cleaning them does not require a ladder. A tilted screen allows debris to slide off.

Floating Intake Device

Most rainwater catchment systems draw water from the bottom of the tank where sediment, decaying leaves and other organic materials often settle.  When water is pulled out from the bottom it carries a lot of this debris with it.  The dirtier the water is that gets pulled from the tank, the faster it will clog filters and more likely to contain unhealthy contaminants.  A floating intake device can help improve water quality by drawing water from closer to the surface, which normally contains less debris and contaminants than the bottom. All this translates to better water quality and saves time and money.

Overflow Device

Picture
Now would be a great opportunity to check your overflow pipe. This is a crucial component to consider when your rainwater tanks are full.
Using an overflow device accomplishes two goals:
  1. Creates an exit path for excess incoming water.
  2. Helps to remove floating debris from the surface of the water in your tank if installed correctly.
Creating an exit path for incoming water is important so that the tank does not overflow its sidewall and threaten the integrity of the platform on which the tank sits, and potentially leading to early failure of the vinyl liners. Removing floating debris from the surface of the water is also beneficial as it is part of the low-maintenance approach that we take to improve the quality of water in your tank.  A correctly installed overflow has the inlet pipe higher inside the tank with a slightly lower exit level outside the tank.
