Volcanic activity can produce Pele’s Hair, extremely fine strands of volcanic glass that may collect on roofs, gutters, and rainwater catchment systems. Once disturbed, this material can become airborne and may compromise household water supplies. Disconnect catchment systems until a couple of rains to flush roof and gutters.

Why this matters:
Pele’s Hair and volcanic ash may irritate the skin, eyes and lungs and can introduce contaminants into household water. Immune-compromised individuals, elders, children, and those with respiratory conditions may be more vulnerable to these exposures, making early prevention critical.
