Why Clean Water Education Matters in Hawai‘i for Rainwater catchment systems Hawai‘i
Hawai‘i is home to tens of thousands of households that depend on rainwater catchment systems as their primary water source. Yet unlike public water utilities, individual catchment systems are not regulated or monitored for safety. This makes education—not regulation—the most effective tool for protecting public health.
Rainwater is an excellent resource, but it is only as safe as the system that collects, stores, and treats it. Without proper knowledge, routine maintenance, and water testing, catchment systems can expose users to biological contaminants, heavy metals, and chemical imbalances—often without visible warning signs.

What Is Personal Water Sustainability with Rainwater Harvesting in Hawai'i
Personal Water Sustainability is the daily practice of securing and managing your own clean water supplyfor hygiene, hydration, food preparation, and food production. It is not simply about conservation; it is about self-reliance, responsibility, and informed decision-making.
In Hawai‘i, many homes operate outside of public water systems. When your water comes from rainwater catchment or a private source, you are the Water Department. The quality of your water—and the health of those who depend on it—rests entirely on how well your system is understood, maintained, and monitored.

When you control your water, you control your health, your home, and your future.

Health, Safety, and Water Testing C
Catchment water safety, clean-looking water is not always safe water. In rainwater catchment systems, many serious contaminants are invisible, odorless, and tasteless—making routine water testing a critical part of protecting household health.
Biological pathogens, heavy metals, and chemical imbalances can enter a catchment system through roofing materials, animal activity, volcanic emissions, acid rain, plumbing components, or improper system maintenance. Without testing, these risks often go undetected until health issues arise.
Routine water testing is essential for anyone not connected to a public water utility.
Testing establishes a baseline for water quality, helps identify emerging problems early, and creates a record that supports informed decisions about treatment, filtration, and disinfection.
Health-focused water stewardship includes:
Water testing is not about fear; it’s about clarity. When you know what’s in your water, you can take the right steps to protect your system, your investment, and the people who depend on it.

Uncle Tilo’s Clean Water is raising the bar for clean water in Hawai‘i—because standards matter.
In Hawai'i there are no regulations or safeguards for catchment systems, homeowners must protect themselves. That’s why UTCW empowers you to verify credentials before anyone works on your rainwater catchment system. Ask if they are ARCSA members—and check for yourself.
Too often, well-intentioned but unqualified individuals arrive claiming expertise, leaving behind costly mistakes: roofs painted with improper coatings, unnecessary tank draining, advice to skip mineral balancing, or systems installed with wet conveyance. We’ve seen the damage—and we’ve heard the stories over the past eight years.
You deserve better.
UTCW educates catchment users to become informed, confident Rainwater Harvesters—so you can make smart decisions, demand professional standards, and protect your water supply and your health.
