Water Disinfection
The quality of your water is a direct link to the quality of your health. Whether your water comes from municipal, well, or catchment, it must be free of pathogens.
A proper disinfection system is imperative for bathing, drinking, cooking, and your overall health. The most common method of water disinfection for well and rainwater catchment here in Hawai’i is ultraviolet (UV) treatment. But be aware, not all UV systems are the same.
There are both NSF-55 Class A and Class B options, the later having intensity ratings that are less than EPA guidelines for potable water use. Size is important as well, there are units limited to 5 gallons per minute, and exceeding this can also lead to poor results.
UV systems rely on electricity to produce light from a mercury arc lamp. That is right, those old UV bulbs contain mercury and should only be disposed of thru a Household Hazardous Waste event. In addition to the need for electricity, the water being treated must also be clear to prevent particles from interfering with light reaching the pathogens. UV systems only retard
a pathogen’s ability to reproduce when it receives a sufficient dose of radiation.
And even when the pathogen is “inactivated”, it is still alive If you are using a UV system for water disinfection, it is important to know which Class it is, the top flow limit, and the quality of water being treated. Go look now! It is your water supply.
New technology is available with no power required, no mercury, and the ability to kill pathogens.
After all, it is about your health.

Clean Water Filter Pack
for Whole House Water Disinfection
The Clean Water Filter Pack is a whole house water filtration and disinfection system featuring Platinum - Quantum Disinfection paired with a 20 micron sediment filter and a 5 micron activated carbon filter to bring clean water without the use of electricity or chemicals.
- Platinum - Quantum Disinfection by Claire Technologies is a chemical-free, power-free, maintenance-free,
- Platinum is rated at 12 gpm (gallons per minute) for 200,000 gallons.
- 20 Micron Universal Sediment Filter, deep spun, with a 2.5 X 10 housing is replaced approx. every 3 months.
- 5 Micron Universal Activated Carbon Filer, with a 2.5 X 10 housing is replaced about every 6 months and works with 45-80 psi and water temperatures between 40 - 100℉.
- Garden Spigot can be used to allow for filtered, but un-disinfected water to be used for such things as washing a car.
- Flow Meter is used to measure the number of gallons used, so you know exactly when to change the Quantum Disinfection component.
- Assembled on a "plug-and-play" board for easy installation.

Reverse osmosis main drawback is the removal some beneficial ingredients —most notably minerals. Water without trace minerals is certainly not natural. Reverse osmosis filtration, like water distillation, was not originally developed for human water consumption; it was developed primarily for industrial use in printing and photo processing.
Since water filtered by reverse osmosis lacks minerals, which are alkaline, it can be acidic. As a result, your body's mineral stores could potentially be leached from your teeth and bones in order to buffer (make more alkaline) the acidic water from reverse osmosis. This could eventually increase your risk of osteoporosis, and increase overall inflammation in your body.
There is a health trade off with reverse osmosis water filters, and many factors need to be taken into consideration. The more informed you are, the better you can weigh their potential advantages and disadvantages. Whether the benefits are worth the disadvantages may ultimately depend on your specific situation: which pollutants may be in your water in the first place (which varies from one location to another), your diet, how you supplement your diet with minerals, your lifestyle and your overall health.
Reverse osmosis a process by which a solvent passes through a porous membrane in the direction opposite to that for natural osmosis when subjected to a hydro-static pressure greater than the osmotic pressure.
