As Rainwater Harvesters in Hawai'i, it's imperative to adhere to best practices in storing and treating rainwater. Our water quality directly impacts our health, and vigilance is critical.

Protect Yourself from Contaminated Water
Remember, showering in contaminated water exposes you to the same risks as drinking it. One of the most common issues in rainwater harvesting is algae growth, which can make your water smell unpleasant. Algae thrive on sunlight through photosynthesis, and their presence in your tank indicates an ecosystem that supports more than just algae.

The Importance of Proper Tank Covers
Polyethylene fabric covers are essential for Dough Boy and Galvanized Steel tanks. Ensure your cover is a 99% Blackout cover, not just a so-called Premium cover. While Premium covers may be more durable, they fail to block enough light and inevitably lead to algae blooms.

Monthly Maintenance for Algae Prevention
Regular maintenance is crucial. Monthly duties include adding 2 ounces of bleach for every 1,000 gallons of water and ensuring thorough mixing in the tank. This kills existing algae and prevents future growth.

Additional Maintenance Tips
Additionally, drain wet piping, keep your roof and gutters clean, use a wool sock over clear filter housings, and apply a 99% Blackout cover over the tank. If you're using a poly tank, consider painting it. The same goes for exposed PVC piping between the tank and your house; paint or bury these lines to prevent algae growth.
